How much time do children spend in front of the screen?
Children and teenagers are spending more time in front of screens, such as smartphones, tablets, and TVs. The average time spent online by those aged 5–15-years old increased from 9 hours per week in 2009 to 15 hours per week in 2018. [1] According to Ofcom’s 2023 research on children's online passive measurement, which measured online use among 162 8–12-year-olds in the UK, it was found that, on average, they spent 3 hours and 5 minutes per day accessing the internet across smartphones, tablets, and computers. [2]
As a result, children spend less time outdoors and engaging in physical activities with their peers. This trend is impacting children's mental and physical development. [3]
Why do children spend their free time in front of a screen?
One possible reason for this shift may be parents' lack of time and physical stamina for proper upbringing and spending quality time with their children. Therefore, providing an interesting hobby or passion related to modern technology in the form of a game process could serve as an alternative to excessive gadget usage.y 2023
Why do children spend their free time in front of a screen?
Engino STEM Centers in Limassol and Nicosia have been organizing workshops on Robotics & Engineering for three years. Here, children work with experienced STEM trainers to assemble models from the Engino construction set, program them, and conduct experiments to better understand the principles of physics and mechanical devices. Also, children can work with 3D printers and laser cutters to create their own inventions.
The advantages of this hobby are numerous. Children develop cognitive abilities by working with their hands and enhance their communication skills and empathy by collaborating in groups. In addition, they acquire practical skills by utilizing modern tools and engaging in contemporary engineering design practices. They also develop problem-solving abilities through open projects.
According to the World Economic Forum Report, employers anticipate the top three rapidly growing skills are expected to be complex problem-solving in the workplace, analytical thinking, and technology literacy [4].
We are currently recruiting for our September intake. You can enroll your kids for a Free 30-minute Introductory Workshop. During this session, the child will have the chance to meet the STEM trainer, interact with other children, and complete a small test task as part of the program.
